Campus Charité
Mitte

Charité in Berlin-Mitte is one of the oldest hospital facilities in Germany. As one of the first steps of the campus renovation, ‘Bettenhaus’ Ward Building Charité Mitte underwent comprehensive refurbishment until 2016 and a new building for the OR, intensive care medicine and emergency room was built at the same time. More steps will follow.

The history of Charité dates back to 1710. At that time, King Friedrich I had a pest house built outside the city’s gates. Since the plague spared Berlin, the house served as a hospice until the King designated it as a hospital and training center for military doctors under the name “Charité” in 1727.

Since then, the historic campus, which is now located in the middle of the city, has been rebuilt, expanded, destroyed and rebuilt over and over again. Among other things, ‘Bettenhaus’ Ward Building Charité Mitte was modernised and comprehensively renovated in the 1980s. During the refurbishment, the building was also equipped with a new, energy-efficient facade, and the functional rooms and rooms for patients and staff were adapted to modern standards and comfort requirements.

The heart of Healthcare City Berlin

Due to its location in the heart of the city, Campus Charité Mitte is predestined to make a significant contribution to shaping “Healthcare City Berlin 2030”. Charité sees the campus as a future hub and interface for an internal and external network. A whole host of connectivity options in the immediate vicinity of important institutions such as the Humboldt University, the Natural History Museum and numerous other research and medical partners. This is also to be utilised at Campus Charité Mitte in the form of shared facilities. In addition, the historic building structure is to be intelligently combined with new architectural paths.

A multi-level competitive dialogue process is planned for the campus in 2022. This includes the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing, the Senate Chancellery – Science and Research as well as the Berlin-Mitte District Office and the state authorities responsible for the preservation of regional monuments.

High-performance medicine on the historic campus

Charité is synonymous with cutting-edge research and humanity. Both will come together on the path to a structural vision for Campus Charité Mitte: with new research centers and buildings for the care of patients. The aim of the master planning is to strike a balance between tradition and the future. Charité, which is the driving force behind the Healthcare City, is also to become even more visible in terms of architecture and city planning.

Charité also wants to promote and develop dialogue with people. One example of this is the Rahel Hirsch Center for Translational Medicine, which is currently being developed and is being expanded into a meeting place for science and society. The Rahel Hirsch Center for Translational Medicine is being created for Charité and the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH@Charité) from the former building for the OR, ICU and emergency station. Rooms for research, outpatient clinics and therapy as well as for administration, events and exhibitions are being built on a usable area of around 15,000 square metres. The spatial connection with the central hospital building at Campus Charité Mitte provides the ideal conditions for dealing with clinical research questions.
